Actions Taken

·        The affected families were provided with temporary shelter in 02 camps.

·        Immediate food supply for displaced population was provided by civil organizations and the government.

·        200 temporary tents were provided for displaced families.

·        Provision of cash grant and dry ration worth Rs. 375 per person to affected families.

·        Monthly Tsunami Stamps are being distributed among 19,094 families.

·        22, 828 affected families were paid monthly livelihood allowance of Rs. 5000. Each of 884 families was paid Rs 2,500 to buy kitchen utensils.

·        Each of 149 families was given Rs 15,000 for funeral arrangements of victims.

·        200 temporary shelters have been provided.

·        Construction of 204 permanent houses has already been commenced.

·        Provision of financial assistance and dry rations for fisheries community.

Confronted Problems and Issues

·        Difficult in finding suitable pieces of land for construction of houses.

·        There were no proper guidelines and clear instructions from national level institution and communication gaps between the district and national level institutions in the tsunami assistance programme.

·        Unnecessary involvement of some non governmental organizations.

·        Most of the affected people were fishermen and their livelihood had become standstill for the last three month period.

 

Challenges ahead

·        Provision of shelter for affected people at new locations

·        Restoration of fisheries sector within a short period of time.

 

Way Forward

·        Provision of permanent houses for displaced families.

·        Provision of facilities to sustain the fisheries industry.
