Renewable power is booming as innovation that brings down costs and starts to deliver on the promise of a clean energy future. The non-renewable energy sources, which are rapidly depleting and causing detrimental impacts on the environment by contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, have led the Government of Sri Lanka to consider alternative renewable energy resources in order to meet the energy requirements in a sustainable manner.

By strengthening this challenging journey, the Government of Japan, as one of the main development partners, by extending its cooperation further, has agreed to provide a grant assistance amounting to Japanese Yen one thousand, two hundred and thirty million (approximately LKR 2.8 billion) to establish photovoltaic solar power generation systems in selected hospitals in Sri Lanka.

Under this project, rooftop photovoltaic solar power generation systems will be installed in three selected government hospitals: Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, Teaching Hospital Rathnapura, and Teaching Hospital Kurunegala. In addition, photovoltaic modules and accessories, power conditioners and accessories, power cables and terminals, fire detectors, other related renovations and related services will be provided. Thisgrant assistance will be a great patronage for technology transfer in the field of photovoltaic solar power generation systems in Sri Lanka.

The Exchange of Notes and the GGrant Agreement pertaining to the above grant were signed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, Mr. K.M. Mahinda Siriwardana, on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka on February 14, 2024, at the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies. His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka, Mr. MIZUKOSHI Hideaki signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Government of Japan and the President, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr.TANAKA Akihiko signed the Grant Agreement on behalf of JICA.

In line with the Government of Sri Lanka’s policy to increase the number of Police Station to 600 with the view to further strengthen the public security, law and order of the country, the government has taken a policy decision to Purchase of 750 Nos Jeeps for Sri Lanka Police (including 150 Nos Jeeps for Special Task Force). The decision has been approved the cabinet of ministers’ for implementation. The financing arrangement for this project has been made with the Government of India through utilization of concessionary funding available in an existing Indian Line of Credit. Accordingly, USD 20 million will be utilized from the above credit line for the procurement of 750 jeeps. At the moment, the prequalification process has been started prior to commence the tendering process.

 

 

Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) had fielded a mission in Sri Lanka during 27th February to 1st March 2019 to review the progress of SFD funded projects. During the mission, SFD officials had project review discussions on following SFD funded projects,

  • Epilepsy Hospital and Health Centers Project
  • Kalu Ganga Development Project
  • Road Network Development Project
  • Badulla – Chenkaladi Road Improvement Project
  • Left Bank Development Project in Kalu Ganga
  • Wayamba University Township Development Project

Further, SFD has agreed to provide Saudi Riyal 187.5 million (USD 50 Million) for the Establishment of Medical Faculty for the University of Sabaragamuwa and Loan Negotiation will be held on April this year. The proposed project will increase the opportunity for talented advanced Level qualified students to enter the National University system.

Since, there is a continued close collaboration and very cordial partnership between two countries, SFD has agreed to provide more financial assistance to enhance the economic development of Sri Lanka by implementing development projects for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka.

 

 

Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) has taken a policy decision to procure 500 buses including 400 Nos. 50-54 High Back Seater New Buses and 100 Nos. 32-35 Seater New Buses for Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB). The main objective of this project is to replace over 15 year old bus fleet in order to maintain the present operation level of SLTB without depleting in rural routes. Accordingly, with the approval of the cabinet of Ministers’, the GOSL has decided utilize the funds available in an existing Indian Line of Credit for procurement buses which is a concessionary financing facility. In light of this, the Government of India has agreed to allocate USD 15.03 million in this regard from the same Credit Line. At the moment, the prequalification process has been undertaken prior to commencement of the tendering process.
